Kelp

Kelp, which secures itself to the bottom of the ocean floor, sometimes breaks or becomes dislodged. It then floats to the surface and drifts, becoming what is known as a kelp raft. These floating islands of kelp offer both food and protection for young fish and invertebrates, as well as feeding grounds for larger fish, birds and marine mammals.
