Willow and Sage.
A heavy fog that covered the Gila National
Forest (western New Mexico) hushed the sounds of my
mid-winter hike, leaving me in a quiet world of
softened light. I came across this patch of
willows and sage and felt that the simplicity of
the colors and light-values matched the peaceful
mood the fog had enveloped me in. However, as I
looked through my lens I didn't see the same
softness, the speckled-grayness, that I saw without
my camera. So I did something quite unusual for
me: instead of perfect detail and sharpness (my
usual route), I decided to go for more of a grainy
look and a softer focus. I put in a very
high-speed film (which has larger, more visible,
grain) and during the second or so that I exposed
the film, I very gently shook my tripod -
delivering a gentle, slightly blurred focus. To
enhance the grain even more I made this a huge
print. I hope that this photo conveys some of the
same peaceful feelings I felt that day.
