Pricing Guide

There are some things you should understand about the way I have priced my images:

Prices will Vary

The prices you see listed are determined by three things: the type and size of print, the mat(s), and the frame.

The Print: Type R and Type C: in terms of cost they are similar. Some images may require more custom work which will up their cost. (Just so you know, Type R is a print made directly from a slide, or a positive image made from a positive transparancy. Type C prints are made from negatives, like what most people shoot. Here, a positive image is made from a negative film.) Ilfochrome Supergloss: This process is super sharp, allows the color saturation to really pop out, has a dense polyester base which gives the surface of the image a glossy apparence, is considered truly archival (which means it will not fade loke other prints will). Ilfochrome is expensive and requires special mounting and handling.

Mats: While most mats are easy to get and allow for perfect cuts every time, some are always on backorder and some just don't let me get away with four clean cuts, what it takes to make the window that you see the image through, without hitting a recycled staple (ruins razors which then tear the mat) or having varied degrees of softness (creates wavy lines). Some mats are two to three times as expensive as others, and while using two or even three mats can enhance the beauty of an image, the more mats used the higher degree of utmost perfection required.

Frames: Frames can, unfortunately, cost more than the price of the actual image. Their prices range from the thin metal variety (which can come in a huge variety of colors and widths) to the exceptionally ornate wood ones. Wood frames, especially on larger images, will really make the image stand out in any room, express your purchase as a true work of art, and will cost you a great deal more. Metal frames can look great and are more affordable. Art Collectors will only buy photographs in wood frames and someone who is truly touched by an image will generally want the image large and as professional and collectable as possible, so I generally list my larger pieces with wood frames and smaller pieces with metal frames.

I do sell images unframed, which allows you to buy the image matted and then frame it yourself. When you do this, you'll receive the print mounted on foam core with the mat(s) cut and secured in place. Basically, it is like what you'd see on the wall except without the glass or the frame. The price for this is listed as the "Matted Print".

The Cost Considerations for YOU: From what you have read above, I hope you have a sense of the range a single image can cost: a single mat, type-R, unframed, 5x7 on a 9x11 mat may cost $50.00 plus shipping, while a triple matted 16x20 Ilfochorome Supergloss, in a 22x28 wood frame may cost $450.00, plus shipping. Ways to make an image really impressive: go with a large size, at least two mats, use a wood frame, and use the Ilfochrome process. Incidentally, these are also the four ways to greatly increase your cost.

There are a few images I only do large (22x29) or in kind of a medium size (18x22), and some I only do Ilfochrome. There are also some images that I only do small (9x11 to 12x16). But generally, most images I can do of multilple sizes, single to triple mats, metal or wood. IN OTHER WORDS, MOST images can be done to fit your budget. BUT, I can only work with you to get you the most perfect image if I know your price range, interest, intent, etc.

Email me at john@jdukesphoto.com to inquire about any image. Make sure to list the size you're interested in, number of mats, type of frame , etc. DO understand that to get these photographs I often go on two to six week photo trips, so if you don't hear from me for a long time it is probably because I am in the middle of Wyoming, not because I just like to ignore you.
